NTpage Administrator - Server Ports

A Server Port is a port on the NTpage Server that will be used for communication to Paging Services. A port can serve as many Paging Services as you would like. A port is physically a modem or and serial port (RS-232). NTpage is fully TAPI compliant, which means NTpage can share a port or modem with other software on the same machine. So you can have RAS (Microsoft Remote Access Service) running and using the same modem as NTpage.

General Tab

  • Port Name - Enter a name you want to use to refer to this port.

  • Active - You can make a port inactive temporarily by setting this to No.

  • Connect using - select how this port will connect to the paging company. You have several options:
Any available TAPI modem - NTpage can search and automatically use any available TAPI modem that is installed and not in use.
Installed modems - This list will also contain all installed modems, you can select one of these to use.
COM port - You can also select and COM port, COM1 - COM64.

  • Paging Protocol - select the paging protocol you want to use on this port. A port can only support one paging protocol.

  • Dial Mode - select the mode dialing / connecting to the paging service.
Standard Dialup - this dials the modem, connects, transmits and then disconnects. This is the default and what is normally used.
Leased Line - use this mode if the port you are configuring will be using a dedicated leased line.
Dial once, stay connected - this is a psuedo leased line capability. In this mode NTpage will dial the paging service over a normal dialup line, but will not disconnect when done transmitting. NTpage will keep the line up, so it does not have to dial each time. This is a special case use, not many paging companies will support this service.

  • Pooling method - NTpage support port pooling allowing you to share a port for communication to more than one paging service, or dedicate a port to only work with one paging service. Thereby dedicating the port to a particular paging service.

  • Use Automatic Modem Initialization Settings - If this box is checked, NTpage will automatically determine the correct modem initialization and dialing strings to use for connecting to paging services. This is a very powerful feature. No more worrying about how to setup or configure the modem. If this box is not checked then a field is displayed for you to input the modem initialization string you want to use.
